Alexandra Grecco

Brooklyn based designer Alexandra Grecco's is probably no stranger to anyone who reads indie fashion blogs. I'm not surprised to read that she's a former dancer - there is something about her clothes that makes you think of ballerinas. Oh, and the model in the first and last picture, how gorgeous?

About food and love for animals

I've always nurtured some sort of farming dreams. When I was younger, I used to spend my weekends at farms outside of my home town, prepared to do any kind of heavy or dirty tasks as long as I got to be close to the horses, sheep, cows and chickens. This love for animals and farm life has stayed with me throughout the years. For a couple of years, me and a group of friends were toying with the idea of moving out to the country side, growing our own vegetables, raising our own animals, living green and closer to nature. As usual, money was always the issue and nothing ever came out of it. Some people, however, take this step. 

I recently came across Big picture farm, run by Louisa Conrad and Lucas Farrell in Vermont. They produce goat milk caramels and cheese that I would love to try, were I closer to the states, and they blog about the farm and their animals here. Conrad, who is an artist, also runs the blog Icelandic butterflies where you can see some of her beautiful photographs. These blogs keep me reading for hours. The love, respect and what could best be described as... tenderness?... they have for their animals is so obvious in each and every blog post and it's impossible to not be completely fascinated with their way of living. I love the idea of small scale farming and production - obviously also when it comes to meat production. For me, it's truly the only way. I think it's safe to say that we all know that the bigger, industrial farms will do nothing for your health, for the dignity of the animals or for the environment. Me myself, I've been a vegetarian for the last 20 years and will most likely keep eating my greens for the rest of my life but if you do eat meat, there are great farmers out there who actually give a damn about their animals and about how and what they produce. For anyone interested in these matters, I would strongly suggest reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. It's a great, non condescending book by someone who has tried eating meat as well as eating vegetarian and it investigates factory farming in the U.S. I've recommended this book to loads of friends, vegetarians as well as meat eaters, and everyone I know who've read it, had something good to say about it. Several also stopped eating chicken, but that's another story.

Blog love: Brinja

A friend of mine send me a link to this blog the other day, obviously knowing me well enough to know that I would fall head over heels. Brinja lives with her family in a beautiful flat in Copenhagen and runs what looks like a great little shop. Her blog is filled with colourful everyday photos and teeny tiny furniture. You see, Brinja is creating a miniature version of her own home. How wonderful?! Just look at these pictures:

Blog love: Schwurlie

I just stumbled across this blog, and oh do I ever so much wish that there were more posts to read! This young lady is very generous with her tutorials and blogs about her sewing. However, what really caught my eye are the posts where she reconstructs old pieces of clothing and creates something completely new and fresh. I love the concept of recycling and considering the amount of clothes my bf has but never wears, her tutorials might come in handy in a very near future. If you're interested in sewing, head over to Kate's blog and show her some love!

Blog love: La maison d'Anna G

Via the excellent blog Volang I found La maison d'Anna G, a blog about Scandinavian interior design and let me tell you this, this lady sure has got an eye for beautiful things. The few snapshots from her own home indicates an eclectic, exciting taste in design. It also reminds me of the fact that I, even though I have been living abroad for the last 2,5 years and intend on keep doing so, do not have a Dala horse. Scandal! 

I am as interested in interior design as the next person I guess, but I keep failing when it comes to keeping my home minimalistic and colour coordinated. I am way too undecided to go for one colour scheme or one particular style. The only interior preferences that have really stayed with me over the years would be my love for 50's design and teak furniture and my never ending affair with the colour blue. As for minimalism, I love it in pictures but let's face it: I collect. I come from a family of collectors. I live with a guy who is kinda messy and with a dog that is everything but organized.

Kris Atomic

A couple of months ago, I stumbled across the magical world of Kris Atomic, aka Kristina. Kristina is a Brighton based freelance illustrator, photographer and blogger. She does fashion illustrations, takes great pictures and creates these lovely round-faced ladies with some ink and loads of talent. I absolutely love her choice of colours and proportions and I'm hoping someone special is reading this, cause the Chronic bitchface print is waaaay up on my Christmas wish list.

I so much wish I could draw or paint. I sketched for several years when I was younger, telling myself that there was a little bit of talent there (my art teachers begged to differ), but honestly I couldn't draw a human body to save my own life. Especially hands, what's up with that? Five fingers, how hard can it be? I do try every now and then, but I always end up throwing drafts away. People who can draw always say that everyone can, just as people with great singing voices always claim that everybody can sing. But let's face it, we are all adults here and it's just not true. I strongly believe that everyone is good at something or maybe even several things, but talent is something that cannot be forced and cannot be produced. Throughout the years, I've tried oil painting, sketching, writing, singing in a band and in a choir, graffiti painting, taking pictures, sewing, knitting, crocheting, origami, baking, playing the piano, playing the guitar and a million other things that made more or less sense at the time. Now, at the tender age of 30, I am starting to figure out what I am actually good at. It may sound a little bit cynical, but with this also comes the insight that there are things best left aside for others to do. If nothing else, it will give me more time to focus on the things that will actually make me feel good about myself rather than feeling frustrated about the things I can't do. This, of course, does not mean you shouldn't try out new things - try absolutely everything that you're interested in and feel passionately about and maybe, along the way, you'll find out that you have talents never developed or even discovered. My lack of drawing skills is something that I (obviously) have a bit of a hard time getting over, but I am slowly getting there. I may not be able to create something as beautiful as these girls above, but I sure as hell can make the most amazing carrot cake.
